best laid plans for may 23-29
Last week was, shockingly, not entirely unsuccessful. I got a fair amount of spinning done, and I expect to be able to finish up experimentation this coming week.
Less shockingly, though? I got basically nothing from the to-do list from last week done. There has been no additional secondary research done and certainly no formatting of that. I suppose that any pre-experiment experimental design is now moot, since I've started on the actual experiment. And I really, really have not gotten anything done in terms of video planning.
Contrary to what the inordinate number of blog posts and photos might suggest, record-keeping has actually been a really huge struggle for this project. It's quite difficult to explain things that are so natural to me -- things that I've been more-or-less working with for about a decade now -- in a way that makes sense to the 'layman'. Honestly, I don't think I've succeeded.
And.
That's besides the fact that taking photos and video has been quite the challenge. As it turns out, capturing fine yarns in a house with poor lighting whilst living on something of a nocturnal sleep schedule is not ideal. My phone is also really low on space, which makes any and all record-keeping that little bit harder. (Not that I'm pressed for technology -- I'm really privileged in that regard -- and besides, I'm pretty stubborn about clinging to my old things. That could be an explanation for why I, a child of the 21st century, am hand-spinning yarn on a drop spindle.)
With all that in mind, I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to go about video-making, but I have not yet come up with any real, actionable ideas. So. Here's the to-do list for the coming week, with the warning that even the best-laid plans never survive first contact.
(I'm actually probably pretty busy this week, on account of both my courses as well as other stuff, but I'm also getting vaccine dose #2 next week, so. Things kind of have to get done now, since that's supposed to be pretty nasty. We'll figure it out.)
to-do:
more secondary research
formatting secondary research into a nice blog post
video planning (a bit of scripting, figuring out some blocking, recording b-roll if necessary, etc.)
primary investigation
finish spinning samples
tensile strength test
